Theatress Weekly Round-Up – 13 June ’21

This week kicked off on a high following Last Sundays live showing of the incredible ‘The Show Must Go On’ which has been streaming for free on YouTube for the entire week. The Theatre Support Fund has raised over ยฃ1,000,000 for 3 amazing charities and the number keeps rising. What a phenomenal welcome back to the West End!

Here’s a round up of some of the most exciting theatre news of the week. Lots of shows to look forward to which will be heading to the east midlands and across the UK in the next year and one show currently on in Leicester which you’d be a fool to miss!

First up, following on from the sell out 2018/19 tour, Rock of Ages has announced its full cast for its highly anticipated 2021/22 return. Kevin Clifton will return in the role of Stacee Jaxx at selected performances accompanied by a stellar cast of both returning and debuting members. The tour kicks off at The Alexandra Birmingham on 19th August before embarking across the UK. Full dates and casting can be found at the website www.rockofagesmusical.co.uk.

Northampton’s beloved Royal and Derngate has announced it’s Christmas offerings and we’re most definitely in for a treat! Dick Whittington will grace the stage of the Derngate as this years fun-filled panto starring soap star Ricky Champ, CBeebies very own Phil Gallagher, award winning pantomime Dame Bob Golding. On the Royal stage for the younger audience members the picture book classic The Gruffalo will be brought to life by Tall Stories. For more information and booking visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

In Leicester, Curve is doing what it does best with a new Made at Curve production – The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber which opened to rave reviews on 7th June. This celebratory reopening concert showcases the life and music of legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and will run until 19th June. Don’t miss it – tickets and info still available here.

The highly anticipated UK Tour of Bedknobs and Broomsticks has finally announced it’s star studded cast which includes Dianne Pilkington and Charles Brunton in the roles of Miss Eglantine Price and Emelius Browne. This magical musical will retell the story of the wonderful 1971 Disney film live on stage. Sure to be a delight for the whole family. In London, The Playhouse Theatre has announced that it will transform it’s stage to host an in-the-round production of Cabaret starring Eddie Redmayne. Meanwhile, just down the road another transformation has taken place at the Trafalgar Theatre which has been returned to its ‘former glory’ by a recently completed multi-million pound restoration. Fan favourite Jersey Boys will be the first production to grace this newly restored stage. Both theatres will reopen their doors later this year!
