REVIEW | Peter Pan – Royal & Derngate, Northampton

This years Christmas offering from Northampton’s Royal & Derngate is the ‘high-flying pantomime adventure’ of Peter Pan. Roughly following the plot J M Barrie’s classic story, this enchanting production transports us to Neverland and into the clutches of dreaded villain Captain James Hook. With faith, trust and a little bit of pixie dust, the magic begins as soon as the curtain rises on this festive adventure and with a little bit of help from his friends, Peter Pan saves the day.

This pantomime feels wonderfully traditional and charming with its heartwarming story and outrageous gags. Barbara Evans’ exceptional direction and choreography coupled with truly dazzling design elements make for an unmissable show. Thanks to an engaging cast it is particularly captivating and will hold even the littlest ones undivided attention with ease. Marshmallows are sent soaring across the stalls, a few unlucky individuals left with damper hair than they started with and a very unlucky chap got a face full of cream. The excitement really never ends!

Humour is of course pivotal and it is pitched perfectly in this production. Despite a few celebrity names being thrown into the mix, they’re not painfully overpowering which can so often be the case. Thanks to The Grumbleweeds you’ll find yourself struggling to catch your breath between fits of laughter and alongside them Darren Day creates a brilliantly sinister yet comical villain. As to be expected, Rachael Wooding wows the audience with stunning vocals but not before having us crying with laughter at an outrageous karaoke duet.

Quite unique to this pantomime are the mesmerising dance breaks performed by the talented boys of Flawless. The entire audience was completely enthralled as they took to the stage and the theatre erupted with cheers after each of their performances.

This has to be one of the best pantomimes I’ve seen. Brilliantly interactive and fantastically entertaining from start to finish. Its captivating, charming and utterly bonkers – an absolutely perfect night out for the entire family this Christmas! Peter Pan is not one to miss!

Peter Pan will be at the Royal & Derngate Theatre, Northampton until 30th December 2018. For tickets and info click here!
